You’ve probably heard about this story, which ha You’ve probably heard about this story, which has been international news the past few days. As another American female world traveler, I want share my thoughts:

1) Respect local laws. No one is forcing you to visit another country. Unless you are trained how to hold and handle wildlife, don't. That's common sense. The Irwins would not have handled the wombat in this way.

So many things could have gone wrong, the mom could have been hit by car while chasing after her, or the joey may have been injured.

She is from Montana, Yellowstone is in her backyard almost. No different than a Yellowstone tourist getting gored as they approach a bison for selfies. She should have known better.

2) Her apology was disingenuous. She claims to have picked up the wombat out of concern. If you watch the whole video, she is clearly smiling, excited, laughing. That's not how someone behaves if they're truly concerned. She claims to be a wildlife enthusiast, then she should act like it.

3) Set a good example. When I travel to Australia or elsewhere, I know I also represent my home, the United States. One thing I hear on my travels is how American tourists are considered to be arrogant and disrespectful. This type of attention does not help.

Lots of her followers like her video, what are the chances even one of them will try to copy her stupid behavior?

4) Going forward: If I was the Australian PM, I'd want her banned from the country. Never to receive a visa again.

In short when you travel, have fun but don't be Sam Jones. Remember you are a guest in that country and you represent your home country as well.

We chose Morocco because the Sahara Desert was on his bucket list and none of us had been. While there were so many fun moments in Morocco and Gibraltar...walking out onto the dunes of the Sahara together, sharing in his excitement is something I will never forget.
