  • Getting Ready for Antarctica

    Antarctica,  Cruise,  Nature,  Solo Travel
    awaywithanita / February 8, 2024

So, you’ve booked your Antarctica expedition and now worried about freezing? Same thing happened to me! Being from Southern coastal California – where it does not get cold – I was concerned about staying warm. I booked my Antarctica expedition around Black Friday – lots of travel deals were running then – which left me with only a month to…

    awaywithanita / February 8, 2024

Antarctica is the world’s largest and coldest desert which spans roughly 5.5 million square miles. It was absolutely incredible, the massive glaciers, the wildlife viewing, and the very peaceful feeling of being completely off the grid. If you’re looking for a remote destination with beautiful scenery in every direction, this is it. When I decided I was going to Antarctica,…

Overview Australia has been on my list of places for a long time because of all the wildlife, scenery and activities.  I also have friends and relatives there. Travel was limited during the Covid pandemic and Australia especially was on a strict lockdown.  Australia just opened up and every state had different Covid policies for tourists.  I just stayed in…

    awaywithanita / February 5, 2024

I flew with Fiji Airways when I visited Australia and I happened to find a flight with a 17 hour layover in Fiji. Extended layovers are best during international travel, it is a 2-for-1 vacation! After all that time on a plane flying from Los Angeles, I knew I wanted to get in the water!  After all, Fiji is known…

    awaywithanita / February 5, 2024

Each day had a planned itinerary that was posted for the passengers in the morning. However, the Antarctica expedition guides and ship were very dependent on weather and water conditions. The weather changed quickly, and that changed the plan for the day. This is a recap of what a typical day on a G Adventures expedition was like. Mornings It…

    awaywithanita / August 17, 2023

I consider myself an adventurous person, but if I was asked where I plan to travel to, I probably would not have mentioned El Salvador.  It’s not an area I knew much about before this trip.  A dear friend of mine is Salvadoran and when I found out her wedding would be in El Salvador, I was very excited to…

You’ve probably heard about this story, which ha You’ve probably heard about this story, which has been international news the past few days. As another American female world traveler, I want share my thoughts:

1) Respect local laws. No one is forcing you to visit another country. Unless you are trained how to hold and handle wildlife, don't. That's common sense. The Irwins would not have handled the wombat in this way.

So many things could have gone wrong, the mom could have been hit by car while chasing after her, or the joey may have been injured.

She is from Montana, Yellowstone is in her backyard almost. No different than a Yellowstone tourist getting gored as they approach a bison for selfies. She should have known better.

2) Her apology was disingenuous. She claims to have picked up the wombat out of concern. If you watch the whole video, she is clearly smiling, excited, laughing. That's not how someone behaves if they're truly concerned. She claims to be a wildlife enthusiast, then she should act like it.

3) Set a good example. When I travel to Australia or elsewhere, I know I also represent my home, the United States. One thing I hear on my travels is how American tourists are considered to be arrogant and disrespectful. This type of attention does not help.

Lots of her followers like her video, what are the chances even one of them will try to copy her stupid behavior?

4) Going forward: If I was the Australian PM, I'd want her banned from the country. Never to receive a visa again.

In short when you travel, have fun but don't be Sam Jones. Remember you are a guest in that country and you represent your home country as well.
